In their second annual green roof survey, Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, a North American green roof industry association, recently announced that Milwaukee was among the top ten cities for green roof installations in 2006. According to survey statistics, a 25% growth rate was experienced over 2005 with more than 3 million square feet installed in 2006.
Milwaukee-based F.J.A. Christiansen Roofing has contributed significantly to Milwaukee’s green roof growth. In addition to the showcase TectaGreen green roof system atop Christiansen’s own facility, other notable Christiansen green roof projects include Discovery World at Pier Wisconsin, University Club Tower, and a City of Milwaukee downtown administrative office facility.
"The green roof industry is growing rapidly in response to the pressing need for cleaner air, better storm water management, improved energy efficiency and more usable green space in our communities," said Steven Peck, founder and president of Green Roofs for Healthy Cities. "Green roofs have really captured many people's attention as a beautiful way to help fight climate change and save money. Green roofs deliver more public and private benefits than any other green building technology, so we anticipate that strong growth will continue into the future."
As part of their educational outreach regarding green roofs, Christiansen also recently participated in an educational seminar on green roof systems at the Wisconsin Business & Technology Expo.
Rounding out the top ten list of green roof cities across the U.S. were: Chicago; Washington D.C.; Wildwood Crest, N.J.; Dulles, Va.; Kansas City, Mo.; Phoenix; New York City, Portland, Ore.; and Columbus, Ohio.
